United Women in Faith

This organization was started by eight women who met on a dark and stormy night in Boston on March 23, 1869.  They formed the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society (WFMS). Their first act was sending educator Isabella Thoburn and Dr. Clara Swain to India to provide healthcare and schooling for women and girls.

Now over 155 years and 25 names later, we are the United Women in Faith. Before 2022 we were known as United Methodist Women. The organization began doing business as United Women in Faith to reflect a more inclusive and modern identity while maintaining its core mission.

We are a lay organization focused on mission work for women, children, and youth.

  • Advocacy: Historically, the group has been a powerful voice for social reform, including women’s suffrage, racial desegregation, and the Equal Rights Amendment.
  • Current Priorities: Today, the organization focuses on climate justice, ending mass incarceration, and supporting global health and education for marginalized groups.

Church Women United

Since 1941, the women of the Church Women United (CWU) movement have held a vision of Christian unity and prayerful action.  CWU was founded as a racially, culturally, theologically, inclusive Christian women's movement to celebrate unity and diversity and work for peace in the world.

CWU's mission:  CWU is an inclusive ecumenical Christian women's movement celebrating unity in diversity and empowering women to work towards a world of peace and justice.
CWU's vision:  women of faith cultivating love, hope, and peace for all creation.  There are local, state, and regional CWU units, as well as National CWU which is headquartered in New York, NY.

CWU sponsors three "celebrations" each year in local CWU units all around the country:  Human Rights Day, May Friendship Day, and World Community Day.

We respect and remember that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights" (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948).  These words guide us as we support, work towards, and fight for human rights for all people.
